Evidence & current status

The status label reflects documented historical use; it is not confirmation of a currently operational Nishant fleet.

Nishant is an Indian tactical reconnaissance aircraft associated with the Army's earlier uncrewed-surveillance capability. DRDO describes automatic navigation, day-and-night observation and a launcher-and-parachute operating arrangement. These features place it in a different category from runway-based medium-altitude aircraft and from the small electric drones now common at unit level.

The developer states that Nishant was inducted into the Indian Army. This supports a historical service record, not a claim that an active fleet of a particular size remains available in September 2026. The profile deliberately separates those two questions: programme heritage is documented, while present inventory and readiness require a newer operator statement.

Panchi is a related but separately documented development that substitutes conventional wheeled take-off and landing for Nishant's original launch and recovery arrangement. Its characteristics should not be retroactively assigned to Nishant. The public developer pages support the family relationship and basic configuration, but do not provide a sufficiently current specification baseline for a detailed numerical comparison.
