Evidence & current status
Factory acceptance is supplier-reported for the first production vehicle. The cited US contract concerns a prototype project and is not evidence of a fully operational US Navy fleet.
HUGIN Endurance extends the HUGIN family into longer deployments with a larger hull, substantial onboard energy storage and mission management intended to reduce reliance on a continuously accompanying survey ship. Kongsberg markets it for seabed mapping, inspection and defence-related undersea assessment. It is an autonomous underwater vehicle, using onboard control while submerged rather than a continuous physical tether to an operator.
The advertised maximum of 15 days and 2,200 kilometres assumes a full battery complement. The manufacturer also describes configurations that exchange some energy capacity for customer equipment, so those maxima should not be attached indiscriminately to every payload. Its nominal depth rating is 6,000 metres. Kongsberg reported factory acceptance of the first production vehicle in 2024 after sea trials, providing evidence beyond a paper concept. Separately, a US Defense Innovation Unit prototype contract explored Navy use of HUGIN technology. That research and evaluation route should be distinguished from the customer acceptance report and from a declaration of operational US Navy service.
