Evidence & current status

Transit evidence is a first-person company announcement. Generic portfolio specifications are not assigned to the named hull; later production contracts require exact model mapping.

Matangi is Sagar Defence Engineering's named autonomous surface vessel associated with the Sagarmala Parikrama demonstration. The company reported that it completed a roughly 1,600-kilometre maiden journey from Mumbai to Thoothukudi in autonomous mode, and acknowledged support from the Indian Navy and its innovation organisations, alongside iDEX.

The programme is significant as a demonstrated integration of a physical vessel and navigation software. Sagar's wider catalogue describes autonomous and supervised control, collision avoidance and modular maritime sensing, including conversion of existing craft. Those general company capabilities do not establish which exact engines, sensors or communications equipment were installed on Matangi during its transit.

The completed journey is recorded as a programme milestone rather than a certified maximum range. The evidence reviewed does not provide a configuration-specific acceptance sheet, payload-versus-endurance curve or clear mapping between this demonstrator and every later procurement report about Sagar vessels. Accordingly, the profile retains a development and trials classification. Confirming production designations and Navy handover records is necessary before treating newer boats as identical Matangi configurations or counting them as an operational fleet.
